WHAT IS “GOSPEL JAZZ”? Part 6: “In Summary”
By Terrence Richburg © 2010
We’re fortunate to live in
a profound time in history when God’s plan for His beloved people has
transcended time, man-made stereotypes, and human paradigms—full-circle from
where the original message of His Word
was proclaimed, but has remained true all the same for centuries. God in His sovereignty uses what and chooses
whom He wishes to fulfill His ultimate will.
He fulfills this regardless of what the status-quo believes, thinks or
feels.

GREAT GOSPEL JAZZ PIONEERS Part 6:
YOLANDA ADAMS
“From the Depths of an Anointed Vessel”
By Terrence Richburg © 2010
Yolanda Adams is one of the most (if not the most) celebrated and successful Gospel female artist of the 21st century. Her unparalleled vocal sound is naturally intense yet endearing, powerful yet consoling and captivates audiences and artists alike with a stylistic diversity and rare approach which sets her apart from all others in modern times. Yolanda’s unique rapid-fire staccato ad lib vocal style, free-style unscripted scats and signature improvisational melodic phrasing incorporates Neo-Soul, Jazz, Hip-Hop and contemporary Gospel fusion at its best. The essence of Yolanda’s sound emanates from a willingness to be used as a vessel by God even from the depths of her spiritual anointing.

JAZZSPIRATIONS: NATIONAL JAZZ ARTIST:
Tim Bowman
“Smooth, Skillful And True”
By Terrence Richburg and Andrea R. Williams © 2010
Sometimes there’s just no substitute for experience in the music industry, as Smooth Jazz guitarist, Tim Bowman has demonstrated over the years. The warmth of his soulful melodic appeal and honey-buttered tone is both infectious and consoling. His ability to continuously peak the charts and produce inspired music that has generated a league of loyal fans and followers is by no accident. But Tim doesn’t owe his success completely to his authentic Jazz style enveloped in pumping R&B grooves and dazzling musical arrangements. Nor can Bowman credit his connection with audiences exclusively to his popular sound that meets listeners wherever their moods seem to take them.

JAZZSPIRATIONS: NATIONAL JAZZ ARTIST:
David Dyson
“Blazing The Trail With The Power Of Humility”
By Terrence Richburg and Andrea R. Williams © 2010

It’s somewhat difficult to fully describe the incredible gift of Jazz Bassist, songwriter, arranger, and producer, Dave Dyson. He has exploded onto the Jazz stage reaping the devoted attention of so many captivated audiences all over the world. The rich flavors and stylistic heights to which Dave takes his music set him far above the rest. He obviously excels in the arena of Jazz funk, fusion and R&B with absolute creative freedom. His sound whether you’re referring to his slap, finger funk, or mute picking technique raises an extremely high bar for any other player to reach or emulate.

JAZZSPIRATIONS: NATIONAL JAZZ ARTIST:
Harold Rayford
“Always There, Always Soulful, Always Anointed”
By Terrence Richburg, Andrea R. Williams and Debbi Johnson © 2010
A unique blend of a thriving instrumental music ministry career coupled with a flourishing pastoral calling within one chosen vessel. Complex yet effective, God has used such a vessel to produce a level of dynamic inspiration normally not seen or heard of in the Gospel ministry panorama of today. Normally one takes a backseat to the other—as one being more natural than the other of lesser skill or ability. Rarely do both abide together in such harmonic peace, separate yet as one, but with such impact-bearing fruit and anointed fluidity as experienced in the ministries of Pastor-Saxophonist, Harold Rayford.

SHED TALK
(New JGC Feature— Techniques, practice, resources, theory & more…)
By Terrence Richburg © 2010
The first time I ever heard the term, “shed” or “sheddin” was when I first started playing guitar and bass. My brother, Dehrric was the first one who exposed me to the term. When we first set out on our mutual journey of musical interests finally developing into a career, we were in the shed constantly working on our craft individually and corporately. The meaning hasn’t changed much over the years. However, as a concept it has expanded to an even more collective setting.
